Unslumber

Unslumber SoundCamp
An audio art sleepover-workshop and concert
April 2 - 3, 2010 @ AKA Gallery, Saskatoon

holophon, AKA Gallery, and Carrie Gates invites you to submit an application to an exciting sleepover audio art workshop and concert called "Unslumber SoundCamp"

"Unslumber SoundCamp" will take place at AKA Gallery's "20 Above" event space in Saskatoon (Saskatchewan, Canada) on April 2nd and 3rd, 2010. Selected artists will camp out in the event space for one night and one day, sharing audio art production skills, collaborating on new audio artworks, and swapping secrets. After an intense and jam-packed 24 hours in the space, the artists will present a concert to the public (April 3rd). Some of the works shown will be independently composed in advance, but some will be created collaboratively at the audio art sleepover. The general theme for the concert is "intimacy". Artists are free to interpret and build concepts together at the event as they wish, but the artists will also partially be selected by the way in which they might make an interesting, dynamic group.

Some "sleepover" elements of the event are loosely based off of the "BarCamp" model (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BarCamp). All invited artists will be expected to interact with the other performers, whether it is by teaching others new techniques, presenting a current project for discussion, or another similar activity of their choosing. These activities will emerge at the sleepover itself, in the spirit of concepts such as of transparency, equality, and participatory design.

Do not let the name fool you, we will probably sleep at some point. Tents and bedding will be provided for those who cannot bring their own. It is possible that we may relive some cute moments from sleepover movies. Bring the slippers, favourite cables, and gear.

Interested artists are invited to submit an application outlining your:

  • brief statement of interest as to what you feel you would gain from this experience
  • commitment to being available for the duration of the sleepover and concert (April 2-3, 2010)
  • history in sound art composition and performance (experienced and emerging artists are welcome to apply)
  • links to online audio works that can be reviewed for reference (3 -5 is best)
  • works that are already composed that you might like to perform
  • skills, projects, and/or ideas that you would be willing to share with the group
  • technical requirements for any specific setups
  • dietary concerns and/or preferences (delightful sustenance will be provided)

*If you do not have samples of your audio work online, you could send the files to otherartists@gmail.com through a free online file storage service such as http://www.sendspace.com, http://www.rapidshare.com, http://www.mediafire.com, etc.

Artists selected to participate will be offered a CARFAC rate honourarium for their performance, delicious food, and wonderful company. A total of eight Saskatchewan-based artists will be selected, as well as one guest artist from outside of Saskatchewan. Small audio art groups, bands, and DJ-VJ teams will also be considered. A projector, Videonics MX-1 Pro video mixer, and a large screen behind the main stage will be available for those who wish to project video during the concert. VJs are also welcome to apply individually to participate in all aspects of the event.

Feel free to email if you have any questions about the application or the event in general.
